The National Energy Authority grants a research licence regarding a tidal power plant in Hvammsfjörður Fjord of Breiðafjörður Fjord

The National Energy Authority issued a research licence to the company Sjávarorka ehf. regarding a tidal power plant in Hvammsfjörður Fjord of Breiðafjörður Fjord on 15 January 2010. The research permit is valid for 6 years, and expires on 31 December 2016.

The National Energy Authority issued a research licence to the company Sjávarorka ehf. regarding a tidal power plant in Hvammsfjörður Fjord of Breiðafjörður Fjord on 15 January 2010. The research permit is valid for 6 years, and expires on 31 December 2016.

 

In preparation for the licence, statements were requested from the Ministry of the Environment, the Committee on Breiðafjörður Fjord and land owners in accordance with Paragraph 3 of Article 5 of Act No. 57/1998 on the research and exploitation of mineral resources, Act No. 54/1995 on the preservation of Breiðafjörður Fjord, and Paragraphs 13 and 14 of Act  No. 37/1998 on administrative procedures.

 

The licence is granted regarding research for a tidal power plant. The licence entails an authorization for the licencee, for the duration of the licence, to conduct measurements and research in accordance with the research plan within the licence area, which is within the 115-m zone from the spring tidal level. The licence does not entail an authorization for the exploitation of tidal power in the licence area involved.
