Aeromagnetic survey east and northeast of Iceland

23.3.2011

The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) will acquire aeromagnetic data in the Jan Mayen Iceland area in Autumn of this year. The survey is supported by the National Energy Authority of Iceland and Norwegian Petroleum Directorate as well as NGU.

The planned survey comprises an area of approximately 64,000 sq. km in the Norwegian-Iceland Sea and will make it possible to map the complete drifting history of the Jan Mayen Microcontinent (JMMC). A geodynamic interpretation of the new aeromagnetic compilation will furthermore facilitate a first order dating of the extensive rifting of the JMMC and conjugates. A proper mapping of the continent-ocean "boundary" will also be  crucial for evaluating the petroleum potential of the area.
